Some of the first people who arrive on accident scenes and at other emergency situations are emergency medical technicians or EMTs for short. These people are trained first responders who provide first aid and other emergency medical treatment for patients in crisis situations, stabilizing patients and transporting them to hospitals and other health care facilities so that they can receive the treatment they need for their injuries or illnesses. There are different kinds of EMT certification, which reflect the different requirements for emergency medical technician certification in different cities and states as well as qualifications to provide certain types of medical treatment.
Some of the certifications for emergency medical technicians which you may come across include first responder (the full title is often emergency medical responder), EMT basic and advanced medical technician. There are also certifications for EMTs including specialties like Advanced Life Support and of course, there are also other emergency medical professionals who perform much the same work as emergency medical technicians and often work alongside of EMTs, such as paramedics and medics.
There are several different kind of work environments which emergency medical technicians may work in, since EMTs are employed by fire departments, police departments, hospitals and other medical facilities and private and volunteer ambulance companies. However, working in any of these emergency medical technician positions requires having the proper certification for this sort of work in your particular state or city and you will need to obtain this certification in order to secure a position in any emergency medical service. How To Become A Certified EMT
The first step is to inquire with technical schools, community colleges and other institutions which offer training courses for emergency medical technicians. You’ll usually need to receive at least a certification in CPR as well as first responder, EMT basic or EMT-185 (advanced medical technician) certification before you can work in most emergency medical services which employ EMTs.
Even though there are online EMT courses available, many states require classroom based education for emergency medical technicians, so be sure to look into your state’s requirements before you sign up for any training course geared towards preparing you to receive EMT certification. However, these online courses can be a great way to refresh your knowledge or meet continuing education requirements for emergency medical technicians. In order to enroll in one of these courses, you will need to be physically able to perform the work of an emergency medical technician, be at least eighteen years of age and have at least a high school diploma or equivalent as well as a clean criminal record.
Once you’ve earned your certification, you can begin working or volunteering as an EMT, but you will also need to renew your licensure every two or three years, depending on the requirements of your state.
